Dear Getaways for Girls Friends,
The Dragon's Backbone Rice Terraces, located 2 hours north of Guilin in southern China, are the most famous rice terraces in China. These terraces, located on high mountain ridges, were first cultivated in the 13th century. Stretching layer upon layer up and around the mountainside they are an amazing site at any time of year.
The Zhuang and Yao nationalities live here. The Yao women are famous for their long hair, they wear it coiled in a large bun and for a small fee they will gladly unravel to reveal hair long enough to reach the ground. In some cases they have one or two hair extensions, which are passed down from mother and grandmother and are neatly tied to their own hair for extra length. Their costumes, embroidered with beautiful patterns and silver jewelery, create a splash of colour in an otherwise green countryside.
Getaways for Girls is planning a tour to China in 2008 which will include a visit to this wonderful region.
