Austria and Germany Christmas Markets Tour

DSCF0075

Originating in Germany the Christmas markets are a traditional occasion that date back several centuries. Held in town centers with cobbled streets and historic  houses, local craftsmen set up markets to celebrate the upcoming festive season in a special way. You will be mezmerised by what is on offer and the atmosphere they exude. We also do some wonderful sightseeing in some special cities but also give you plenty of free time for your own exploring.

DAY 1   ARRIVAL MUNICH

Arriving early in Munich we enjoy a panoramic city tour seeing all the beautiful buildings and get a feeling for this exciting city.
Afternoon and evening at leisure.

DAY 2   MUNICH   (B/D)

Morning city tour of Munich with an inside visit to the opulent Baroque Nymphenburg Palace.
Afternoon at leisure to wander around the Marienplatz and enjoy your first Christmas Market.  We meet later for dinner.

DAY 3   MUNICH    (B/L/D)

Full day trip to Linderhof & Neuschwanstein Castle. Your first castle stop is the elegant Linderhof, King Ludwig's favorite castle. It was built between 1870 and 1879, modelled on the Petit Trianon at Versailles, France.
Later in the afternoon, step into the magical world of Castle Neuschwanstein, the majestic castle built on the ruins of "Vorder und Hinterhohenschwangau". This castle brings back memories of children's fairy tale stories. A breathtaking sight in the Pollat River Gorge, the castle was well equipped with revolutionary (at that time) technical devices. It also shows the admiration the King had for the composer Richard Wagner. Return to Munich and dinner.

DAY 4   MUNICH - SALZBURG    (B/D)

After breakfast we board our coach for a scenic drive via Seefeld to the mountain rimmed city of Innsbruck, where we have lunch, before we arrive in Wattens at the Swarovski Crystal Exhibition, Museum and factory. After this wonderful experience, we head to the picturesque city of Salzburg.

DAY 5   SALZBURG    (B/D)

After breakfast we join a local Salzburg lady for a walking tour of the old city.  A walking tour in the pedestrian area is the best way to see all the well known sights, the market square, cathedral, Mozart’s birthhouse, the famous Getreidegasse. In the afternoon we have time to wander around the markets and in the evening we will dress up for a Mozart dinner concert at the Stiftskeller St. Peter,  the oldest restaurant in Europe dating from 803AD.

DAY 6   SALZBURG    (B)

Remember all your favourite things, grab your outfits made of curtains and come with us on a tour to the Sound of Music’s famous locations.
Afternoon at leisure to enjoy some more crisp apple strudel.

ABOUT THIS TOUR

The weather is beginning to turn cold so being able to dress up with hats, scarves, and gloves at the festive season is something special, and there may even be snow. The towns, shops and markets will be wonderfully decorated and there will be plenty of Christmas winter food to sample. The accommodations and restaurants are well heated so normal clothes are fine inside. There are occasions for free time to wander on your own.

This is a land package and does not include international flights. We can arrange the best available airfare for you to suit your requirements. Please note the tour requires a minimum number to proceed (see below). The earlier you book the earlier we can confirm the tour is going ahead, and international flights can then be arranged.

SMALL GROUP SIZE

We like to keep our groups small. Our maximum group size is 15 and we require a minimum of 9 for the tour to proceed.

INCLUSIONS IN THE TOUR

Many meals are included (except drinks) in the itinerary indicated by (B) = Breakfast, (L) = Lunch and (D) = Dinner. We eat at traditional and interesting restaurants, with festive music and entertainment. Our hotel breakfast buffets have an array of European delicacies which will be ample to keep your energy sustained way until lunchtime. All transfers, tours and sightseeing as per the itinerary.

ACCOMMODATION

Our hotels are all centrally located in the areas we visit.

TRAVELLING

We will be travelling by 1st class rail and coach. When using the rail you will be required to pull your own bag, we will be transferred by coach if the hotel is far away or it may be a short walk across the road from the station. Luggage with wheels is advisable. Due to the fact that most European cities have large pedestian areas, there will be a fair amount of walking so good walking shoes are advised. We recommend that you walk regularly leading up to the departure date. Also as the food is very delicious, you will need to counteract the extra calories that you will be easily enticed with!  Remember you will need room in your bag for all the special items you will find along the journey, so travel light. A good coat/jacket and comfortable easy to wear clothing. At some of the dinner concerts there is a dress code so something smart may be required.

TIPPING

Tipping for guides and drivers is included. You may wish to tip hotel porters if luggage is taken to your room and this will be your responsibility.

GUIDES

A tour manager from Australia will be there to assist the group to make it enjoyable for you. Local guides will be used at each destination to share with us their knowledge on the places we visit.
